First, define what the money needs to do
Future income, a family property and business expansion do not require the same solution. A Brazilian considering the United States also needs to organize obligations in Brazil, the currency of future expenses and time available to oversee a project. Buying before clarifying these priorities makes a comparison less useful.
Write one sentence: “I want this wealth to help achieve ___ in ___ years.” Add how much you may need to access before then and which losses would be incompatible with your life. Time horizon and capacity to accept risk are central to Investor.gov's educational guidance on allocation.
Ask the same questions of each path
The matrix below structures a conversation. It does not predict returns or determine which option suits you. Actual conditions depend on the property, business, assets and contracts involved.
| Path | Purpose | Liquidity and involvement | Costs to establish | Risks to examine | Responsible professionals |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Property | Personal use, rental or a property project. | A sale requires a buyer and closing; ownership needs oversight. | Purchase, taxes, insurance, association fees, maintenance and management. | Vacancy, unexpected expenses, price and regional concentration. | Broker, inspector, title/closing provider, accountant and manager as needed. |
| Business | Operating and developing a commercial activity. | Exit requires negotiation; establish who runs daily operations. | Acquisition, staff, working capital, licenses and transition. | Demand, execution, dependence on individuals and liabilities. | Business consultants, accountant, attorney and sector specialists. |
| Financial portfolio | Wealth objectives established through planning. | Access varies by asset and contract; periodic reviews are needed. | Advisory fees, custody where applicable, products, transactions and currency conversion. | Market, credit, currency, concentration and exit restrictions. | Firms and professionals authorized for the service and jurisdiction. |
Liquidity, diversification and costs come before products
“I can sell” does not mean “I can exit when I need to, at the required price.” Ask about timing, redemption conditions and exit expenses. Consider what you already own: another purchase could increase exposure to the same sector, region or income source.
Investor.gov describes diversification across and within asset classes. It can distribute risk while losses remain possible. Several products holding similar positions may leave a portfolio concentrated.
Ask for total costs in writing. Distinguish the professional's compensation from product and account expenses. The official guide to fees suggests asking how a professional gets paid and what it costs to purchase, maintain and sell investments. Compare alternatives over the same horizon and identify expenses that are still unknown.
